And with all major bookmakers offering their players DOTA 2 bets, we thought a comparison tool. This allows you a hassle-free analogy off the current live Dota 2 betting odds. It would also help answer the most important question: where should I bet on Dota 2?
Types of DOTA 2 Betting Odds
Since its official launch in 2013, Dota 2 continues to deliver some of the most exciting tournaments and matches.
Dota 2 has a well-established Circuit and a final event that constantly offers the largest prize-pools in the history of professional esports competitions. Not only that, but, Dota 2 offers some of the most exciting betting options out there.
All major bookmakers offer their players pre-match and live Dota 2 odds. So, we thought an explanation of what each type means would be more than welcomed.
Pre-match DOTA 2 Odds
The pre-match Dota odds are the ones you can compare using our comparison table and the easiest one to understand. Before any event, all bookmakers that offer Dota 2 odds will check each team’s form, history, previous performance, missing players. Thereafter, they come up with a number representing the odds for that team to win the match.
These are the Dota 2 odds that you can see in our comparison tool above. There are a multitude of pre-match odds that you can bet your wagers on. Beside the ones for a Match Winner, in Dota 2 betting you can place wagers on the team most probably to get the First Kill or Win the first Round.
Live Betting Dota 2 Odds
Another type of Dota 2 Odds is the one that becomes active after game starts. This type remains active for its entire duration, so you don’t have to bet immediately. Live betting became increasingly popular among professional players, able to spot a particular trend early on during the game.
Live betting odds are constantly adjusting during the match, usually by a computer algorithm. The algorithm tracks various elements of the game and updates the odds accordingly.
Imagine a match between Liquid (odds 1.4) and OG (odds 1.6) with pre-match odds that showed Liquid as being slightly favourite. The match starts and in the picking phase Liquid doesn’t managed to get the best roster of champions.
The calculator analyses the info and updates both team odds to 1.45 for Liquid and 1.55 for OG. One thing to have in mind is that even though odds might change for a team, this doesn’t affect any wagers placed before.
Dota 2 as an esport
The history of Dota 2 as an esport started way before the official launch of the game. While still in its beta, Valve – the game’s publisher, allowed the title to be showcased at various esports events such as DreamHack or Electronic Sports World Cup.
Esports fans and orgs quickly embraced the game. And by the end of 2011, Dota 2 became one of the highest-paying esport games, second only to StarCraft II.
In the following years, Valve started sponsoring more and more tournaments. In 2017, the Dota Pro Circuit introduced Major and Minor events and a point-based reward system. That system earns top teams direct invites to that season International.
The Dota International is the top esport event of the year in terms of prizes. Thanks to a crowdfunding system that allows fans and players to contribute to that year’s overall prize pool.
$25 millions was the total prize pool for the 2018 edition of the tournament. The tournament winner had reserved over $11 millions.
The massive awards have attracted all major esports orgs in the world. Soon after, most of the online bookmakers started offering Dota 2 wagers to their players. This is where our tool steps in, allowing you to compare Dota 2 odds and choose the best operator.
How are Dota 2 tournaments organized?
The official Dota 2 tournaments are currently organized under the umbrella of the Dota Pro Circuit. The system introduced by Valve in 2018 had to replace the existing Major tournaments because they were heavily criticized. People criticized Valve for their lack of transparency and unpredictable nature for handing out International invitations.
The Qualifiers are usually held online and are divided by regions. For instance, the 2019 Kuala Lumpur Major had 6 regional qualifiers, for each of the following regions: North America, Europe, South America, CIS, China, and Southeast Asia.
Events are in pairs with Majors taking place first and with no direct invites being sent out. Teams qualify for a Major event by winning the qualifiers or, alternatively, one of the Minors.
The main differences between Major events and Minor events are represented by the number of teams, prize pool and overall DPC points awarded.
Details | Majors | Minors |
---|---|---|
Teams | 16 | 8 |
Prize Pool | $1,000,000 | $300,000 |
DPC Points | 15,000 | 500 |
The role of the DPC points is to determine the 12 out of the 18 teams that will take part in that season’s The International. This is the concluding event of the yearly DPC season that will see the top Dota 2. To learn more about the DPC visit Dota 2’s official FAQ page.
What are the official Dota 2 events?
The latest Dota 2 competitive season introduced a revamped format to answer some criticism previous tournaments received for their lack of clarity on how they gave invitations.
The official format of the Dota Pro Circuit sees tournaments divided into Majors and Minors, with a minimum number of qualifiers for each. Valve is the main sponsor of the events. The tournaments are usually organized together with various event organizers such as MDL, DreamHack, StarLadder, PGL or Epicenter. The 18/19 season saw five major tournaments, each with an overall prize pool of $1,000,000:
- The Kuala Lumpur Major
- The Chongqing Major
- DreamLeague Events
- MDL Disneyland Paris Major
- The EPICENTER Major
The yearly Dota 2 season usually concludes each mid-summer with The International. Abbreviate as TI, this an annual tournament where all the top teams based on the number of DPC points collected, gather for a final showdown and a shot at the biggest prize pool in the world of esports.
Types of Dota 2 Bets
To be able to compare Dota 2 odds it is first necessary to understand the types of bets you are allowed to place online. If you are familiar with betting on traditional sports such as football or hockey, then you will probably notice the similarities between the types of wagers you’re allowed to make.
In esports betting, as in regular sports betting, you’ll have to choose the match winner, try and guess the outcome of a specific match variable or, if you’re familiar with teams and players, you can even place a handicap bet. Online bookmakers can offer various types of Dota 2 bets but the most common ones you’ll encounter online are the following:
Winner / Moneyline Bet
In a moneyline bet all you have to do is pick the winner. This is the simplest, most straightforward type of bet, offered by all bookmakers and thus the one our odds comparison tool was built around. To compare Dota 2 odds for a moneyline bet means simply identifying the operator offering the highest odds.
Handicap Bet
Based on the moneyline bet, a handicap bet is offered when the bookmaker considers one of the competing teams to be at a disadvantage. To make bets on that team more attractive, a sportsbook will place a handicap on the favourite team. For example if the match winner will be dictated by a Bes of 5 format, the team considered least favourite might receive a +1 handicap.
Totals / Over / Under Bet
With these types of Dota 2 bets we enter the realm of professional esports betting as they require considerably more knowledge around the teams and players.
An Over / Under wager means betting not on the match result, but on a particular game variable. For instance, you can bet if the total number of Hero kills in a match will be Over or Under a particular figure. This number is chosen by the sportsbook and it’s based on historical data.
First Kill Bet
Again, this is a type of wager that we can only recommend to experienced players. It has become increasingly popular in past years as punters are getting more familiarized with team play styles and players skills. You might encounter this type of Dota 2 bet either in relation to a team or a player.
Odd / Even Bet
This type of bet allows you to wager on the outcome of a game variable sum being an odd or an even number. Most of the time these wagers are offered alongside Over / Under bets as they tend to be associated with the same variables. In Dota 2 an Odd / Even bet can be offered in relation to total number of kills or round victories.
